Lazio drew the first blood in their encounter with Bayern Munich managing a 1-0 win against the Germans in the first leg of the Uefa Champions League knockout stage.
Ciro Immobile’s penalty kick gave Lazio the solitary goal. This came at the back of Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano’s clumsy challenge on Gustav Isaksen for which the France international was sent off with a straight red card.
Bayern struggled throughout the match as Lazio continued to pile the pressure on the Germans who became toothless and failed to register a single attempt on target.
The Bavarians went into the match with the 3-0 loss against Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga hanging over their head, which they were desperately trying to shake off.
Thomas Tuchel has lost 10 of his 43 competitive matches as FC Bayern coach, which is already as many defeats as his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann suffered in 84 games in charge of the club.
“We’re frustrated and angry about the defeat. I think we lost the game, I’m not sure Lazio won it. I’m not sure why we lost our conviction in the second half, but we did and then we fell behind. I can’t explain it because we told the team to maintain their intensity and be even braver going forward, but we seemed to lose face at the start of the half.” stated Tuchel.
