Uganda: 10 mourners killed, 25 injured in road crash

Ten (10) people have been confirmed dead while 25 others were seriously injured in a fatal road accident in Rakai, Central Uganda.

The accident, which occurred at around 1:30 pm Wednesday, March 27, involved a motor vehicle UAP 559X Canter Lorry, along the Kyalulangira-Isingiro Road.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the driver of the lorry was carrying 35 people who were heading to Isingiro for a burial ceremony, more than 100 kilometres away.

“He lost control of the vehicle and overturned killing instantly 10 people and injuring 25 others. The traffic police responded to the scene immediately, and the bodies were transported to Kyalulangira H/C III for post-mortem examination,” a police report seen by TV47 Digital reads in part.

An eyewitness who spoke to The Monitor says the vehicle was moving at a terrible speed when the accident occured.

“I urge our health workers to try their best and give the casualties maximum care and save their lives,” Paul Nuwamanya said.

The victims of the accident were also taken the same health facility for first aid, before being transferred to Rakia Hospital for specialised treatment.

Rakai District Police Commander Justus Tashoba says the driver of the lorry ran away from the scene and “we are looking for him.”

“Investigations into the cause of this crash have kicked off,” Tashoba added.
