Uganda MPs give Mombasa Port clean bill of health after maiden direct oil import

A parliamentary committee on National Economy from Uganda on Wednesday, August 14 applauded the on-going investment in Kenya’s Mombasa Port’s technology and equipment modernization to enhance efficiency.

The committee toured key installations including the KSh42 billion Kipevu Oil Terminal (KOT2).

The Head of the delegation, Mr. Robert Migadde, reaffirmed that Uganda was satisfied with the quality of refined petroleum products delivered through the Port of Mombasa.

The Ugandan MPs were received by the Manager Marine operations Captain Moses Muthama on behalf of the Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Captain William Ruto.

He briefed the delegation on the various areas of potential cooperation between the two nations that enjoy close and cordial bilaterial relationship.

Uganda remains a key trading partner for Kenya as its exports and imports passing through the Port of Mombasa continue to record a positive trajectory.

Kenya has been lobbying Uganda to continue using the port of Mombasa to import fuel after the landlocked country starts direct purchases of petroleum products.

The Mombasa Port’s KOT2 handled the maiden direct import consignment of petroleum products for Uganda government in July this year.

Nairobi and Kampala, in May this year, signed a deal that will see Uganda use Mombasa Port and the Kenya Pipeline Company infrastructure to transport its fuel.

At first, there were fears that Uganda will drop Mombasa Port in favour of the port of Dar es Salaam to handle its fuel imports.
