UK and US lead military operations to improve African security and stability

The UK Armed Forces are playing a key role in two large-scale military exercises, Justified Accord and Cutlass Express, led by the United States. These exercises, involving over 2,000 personnel from 29 countries including 22 African nations, aim to enhance regional security and cooperation.

Exercise ‘Justified Accord’: Strengthening Ground Operations

Exercise Justified Accord, which runs from February 10–21, is a multinational land-based military drill hosted by Djibouti, Kenya, and Tanzania. The UK has been one of the largest contributors, with its 3 RIFLES B Company working alongside the US 173rd Airborne Brigade, the Kenya Army, Kenyan Marines, and forces from Tanzania and Somalia.

The exercise includes simulated combat operations such as: coordinating and executing ground attacks, urban warfare, air-support coordination, drone usage, and medical evacuations. These drills prepare troops for real-life scenarios where rapid and effective collaboration is crucial.

Exercise ‘Cutlass Express’: Naval Warfare Training

Running simultaneously, Exercise Cutlass Express focuses on maritime security and is being conducted primarily in Mauritius, Seychelles, and Tanzania. This naval warfare exercise involves: high-speed vessel boarding and control tactics. Teams train to board and secure various ships, from small boats to larger vessels under fire, enhancing their ability to counter piracy, smuggling, and other maritime threats.

Long-Term Partnerships for Regional Security

Both exercises highlight the enduring military partnership between the UK and the US in supporting African security. Exercise Cutlass Express is now in its 15th edition, while Justified Accord has been evolving since 1998. These training missions align with the African Union’s security goals by preparing forces for future United Nations and African Union missions on the continent.

The UK’s commitment to African security extends beyond these exercises. Notably, the UK played a pivotal role in creating Kenya’s first-ever marine unit and continues to collaborate with special forces from Nigeria and Ghana.

UK Commitment to African Security

Olly Bryant, Defence Attaché at the British High Commission in Nairobi, emphasized the UK’s dedication to regional stability.

The UK is a long-term partner, helping to deliver long-term stability and security across East Africa, and we are proud to be working with our allies on delivering high-capacity and high-quality activity.”

As these exercises conclude, they reinforce the importance of international cooperation in safeguarding Africa’s security, prosperity, and shared interests.
