Ulinzi Starlets boosted their Football Kenya Federation Women’s Premier League (FKF WPL) title hopes with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kibera Soccer Women in a tense encounter played Wednesday at Ulinzi Complex, Nairobi.
The match was decided by a 47th-minute goal from Fasila Adhiambo, whose strike slipped through the Kibera goalkeeper’s hands to give Ulinzi the lead.
Kibera Soccer, who started the match aiming to consolidate their slim advantage at the top of the table, saw their efforts to equalize thwarted when a 67th-minute goal was ruled out for offside.
Ulinzi missed two clear chances to extend their lead, with Cecilia Rasoha heading wide and JoyKing Lady missing a penalty in the dying moments.
Despite the setback, Kibera Soccer’s assistant coach Samuel Njuguna remained optimistic about their title chances, emphasizing that with two matches remaining, the race remains open.
“We failed to be clinical and wasted a lot of chances. We will go and rectify the mistakes and come back stronger. The league is still open; we can still be champions and the race is still tight,” Njuguna said post-match.
The win lifts Ulinzi Starlets to second place, three points behind leaders Kenya Police Bullets, who secured a 1-0 win over Bungoma Queens to tighten their grip at the top.
Ulinzi head coach Collins Ochieng expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, stating, “The game was good and had a few chances. The one who took advantage of the chances created won the day. We will be eyeing to finish stronger in our last match against Kisumu All Starlets.”
Other results saw Trinity Starlets edge Mombasa Olympic 1-0, Zetech Sparks defeat Bunyore Starlets 3-2, and Vihiga Queens beat Kisumu All Starlets 4-2.
