Ulinzi Starlets win FKF Women’s Cup title for the third time

Ulinzi Starlets has once again successfully defended their title, claiming victory in the 2024 FKF Women’s Cup final against Kibera Soccer Ladies.

The match began with Ulinzi Starlets taking an early lead in the 4th minute when Sheryl Angachi found the back of the net. They continued to dominate, creating several clear-cut chances. In the 39th minute, Linda Kihara redeemed herself for an earlier missed opportunity by scoring Ulinzi’s second goal.

The second half witnessed second-half substitute Maximila Robi score a goal in the 74th minute pulling one back for Kibera. Despite Kibera’s fightback, Ulinzi’s first-half goals were enough to secure their victory.

In the third-place playoff match, Zetech Sparks faced Kenya Police Bullets in a thrilling 7-goal encounter.

Violet Akinyi opened the scoring for Zetech in the 15th minute, a lead her team maintained until halftime. The second half saw a spirited comeback from Police Bullets. Diana Wacera levelled the score in the 54th minute, and just four minutes later, Puren Alukwe gave Bullets a 2-1 lead.

Violet Akinyi equalized for Zetech with her second goal of the match in the 65th minute however, Lucy Kwekwe restored the Bullets’ lead in the 79th making it a 3-2 scoreline.

Sparks were however not deterred, fighting back to bring the match back on level terms once again through a Foscah Nashivanda strike in the 84th minute. Ultimately, Rebecca Okwaro secured the win for Police Bullets with an 82nd-minute goal, clinching third place.

As for the individual awards, Lavender Akinyi of Ulinzi Starlets was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Her teammate, Phiona Ariko, earned the Golden Glove with three clean sheets while Police Bullet’s Lucy Kwekwe was the tournament’s top scorer, tallying five goals.

Ulinzi Starlets have now won the title three times in a row, an unprecedented achievement that underscores their dominance in the women’s cup competition.
