The man behind the chart-topping hit Merimela, Uncle Ckoniah, revealed the personal and profound inspiration behind his popular song during an interview on Dr. Ofweneke Tonight on TV47.

The veteran musician and songwriter shared with the host and audience that the song, which had been a massive success during its release, was rooted in his own life experiences and reflections on relationships.

In the candid interview, Uncle Ckoniah explained how Merimela was more than just a catchy tune.

The song, which had been a favorite among many, particularly young people, carried a deeper message about the pitfalls and complexities of relationships.

For Uncle Ckoniah, the lyrics were a reflection of some of the personal challenges and lessons he had learned during his youth.

“There are several stories behind the song, one it is a composition. Two, it’s poetic. Three, it’s personal experience at some levels.

I was a student who loved Kiswahili as a subject. My swahili is not one that I’ve been raised with, it’s just putting one and two(s) together.

For those who have closely followed me, they know that from where I come from, Swahili is not widely or easily used but I tried my best to come up with different proverbs and nouns to create that story.

Secondly, I’ve ever been to a counselling class, where I was taught about counselling.

So after studies, I got a chance to work as a counsellor.

So from time to time I could meet with my clients who needed advise on matters HIV.

As you can remember back then, HIV stigma was very high and treatment was also expensive.

Expensive in terms of availability of drugs, so you had to travel several kilometres.

So from that counselling room, I decided to come up with a song that could drive a message to the mass instead of sitting.”

The song became known for its witty, yet cautionary lyrics that warned young men about the risks of being involved with untrustworthy girls.

Its message resonated with many, including comedian Dr. Ofweneke, who humorously admitted in a previous episode that Merimela helped him maintain his virginity as a boy.

The popularity of the song transcended its humor, with many listeners seeing it as a wake-up call about the realities of relationships.

The song’s popularity was not only due to its message but also its infectious melody and Uncle Ckoniah’s unique musical style, which blended storytelling with humor and insight.

He acknowledged that while some listeners may have taken the song lightly, it carried a much more serious undertone for him personally.

As Dr. Ofweneke quipped about the song saving his innocence, Uncle Ckoniah smiled, happy that his music had left such a lasting impact.

He also revealed that the success of Merimela encouraged him to continue making music that spoke to real-life situations, blending humor with important life lessons.

Uncle Ckoniah’s appearance on Dr. Ofweneke Tonight show on Wednesday September 18, 2024 was a trip down memory lane for many fans of his music, who were excited to learn more about the inspiration behind one of his most iconic songs.

His storytelling not only entertained but also gave fans a glimpse into the creative process behind a song that had shaped the lives of many, including the TV host himself.

As the show ended, Dr. Ofweneke thanked Uncle Ckoniah for his contribution to Kenyan music, and for the wisdom that came through in his work.

The episode left viewers both nostalgic and enlightened, appreciating the power of music to reflect life’s hardest lessons and deepest joys.
