Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki has expressed confidence in the Kenya Kwanza administration’s ability to successfully implement Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under President William Ruto’s leadership.
Speaking at a joint meeting between the Interior and Health Ministries on UHC, Prof. Kindiki praised the current administration for taking what he described as the necessary steps to ensure the coverage succeeds where previous governments had failed. He highlighted the significant groundwork done by Ruto’s economic advisory team and the Ministry of Health, which, he stated, will guarantee the success of the UHC initiative.
Prof. Kindiki stressed that the initiative would be executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, specifically through the deployment of Community Health Promoters (CHPs). He emphasized the need for clear and simple messaging to ensure that the program reaches and is understood by rural communities.
“What we need from this meeting are clear, straightforward messages that can be easily grasped by individuals at the grassroots level,” Prof. Kindiki remarked. He pointed out that National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) will play a pivotal role in supporting the implementation of UHC at the grassroots level across all sectors.
Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that for the UHC initiative to succeed, local communities must be well-informed about the program. She explained that this is why the Ministry of Health is partnering with NGAO officers to boost public awareness.
“The reason we are here today is because of your vast experience, strong community connections, and your ability to quickly raise awareness at the local level,” Barasa said. “We need your expertise and your platform to educate the community about the benefits of the program and to encourage people to register for affordable, high-quality healthcare.”
This collaboration between the Interior and Health Ministries signals a focused effort by the Kenya Kwanza administration to make UHC a reality and to ensure its benefits reach the entire population, particularly those in remote and rural areas.
