A university graduate in Nigeria has attempted to take his own life, over frustrations due to his withheld marks.

Precious Ogbeide graduated from Ambrose Ali University in 2018 but up to date, he has not received all his marks for the units he studied. 

According to his parents, Ogbeide has been suffering from depression due to the frustrations in trying to get his missing marks at the university.

A family member who witnessed the incident said that he stabbed himself with pieces of a broken bottle.

“I received a call at about 3:30 pm on Monday, September 25  that Ogbeinde had been rushed to the hospital.”

“I was told he had been showing signs of depression and that they had tried to help in every possible way they could,” a family member said.

He added that the university graduate almost killed himself but he was saved by friends and family members who rushed him to hospital.

Several other former students from the university had also raised concerns about missing marks as they accused the management of laxity in handling their issues.

On the other hand, Mike Aladenika who is the Head of Corporate Communications at the university, defended the institution insisting that the affected students needed to liaise with their lecturers to iron out mistakes committed during the coursework to get official marks.

“Some of the students who did not solve issues of marks with their lecturers during their course work are the ones facing these challenges,” Aladenika stated.

He added that students who did all the required units and completed all assessments would not experience problems of missing marks at the university.
