University student Ian Njoroge freed after assault case withdrawal

University student Ian Njoroge has been released after the complainant, Corporal Jacob Ogendo, agreed to withdraw the assault case against him in a significant turn of events.

This development follows the intervention of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who played a pivotal role in mediating forgiveness and facilitating the withdrawal of charges.

The incident, which occurred in June 2024, involved Njoroge assaulting Corporal Ogendo during a traffic stop, an event that was widely circulated on social media and sparked extensive public debate. Following the altercation, Njoroge faced multiple charges, including robbery with violence, causing grievous harm, and resisting arrest.

Moved by a plea from Njoroge’s mother, Ruth Nyambura, Sonko reached out to Corporal Ogendo, who had previously served as his bodyguard during his tenure as a Member of Parliament. Demonstrating a remarkable act of clemency, Corporal Ogendo agreed to forgive Njoroge, stating, “Even though I am hurt, I will agree to forgive him, Sonko reached out and I agreed to forgive the boy.”

Expressing his gratitude, Sonko remarked, “I am grateful that Police Corporal Jacob Ogendo honored my request to forgive Ian and give him a second chance to turn his life around. Being jailed at such a young age could have negatively impacted his future.”

In addition to mediating forgiveness, Sonko extended financial assistance to Corporal Ogendo, providing KSh30,000 to aid with medical expenses and personal challenges he was facing at the time.

To secure Njoroge’s release, Sonko offered one of his personal vehicles as surety for the Ksh700,000 bond set by the court, ensuring that Njoroge was granted an opportunity to reform and continue his education.

The legal proceedings culminated in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) withdrawing the robbery with violence charges against Njoroge. Sonko extended his appreciation to the DPP and acknowledged the efforts of the legal team led by advocates Duncan Okatch, Ken Echeza, Angela Wanjiru, and their assistant Angela Kamau.

Reflecting on the outcome, Sonko stated, “I am also happy for Ian, as he has shown growth, obedience, and respect.”
