A student has tragically taken her own life at Makerere University just two weeks before her long-awaited graduation ceremony at the prestigious Ugandan education institution.

Local media reports state that Irene Nabaggala, aged 22, was poised to graduate at the institution’s 74th graduation ceremony scheduled from January 29 to February 2, 2024.

According to the reports, Nabaggala had completed her Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Immunology, but unfortunately succumbed to depression—a condition she had been grappling with for a while.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the heartbreaking news of Irene Nabagala’s passing, a beloved member of the Makerere University Biotechnology family. To friends and family, may you find comfort in the memories you shared with Irene during this tough time,” expressed the university’s Biotechnology Society in a tweet.

Form 3 girl ends own life citing harassment from school prefect

A Form Three student at Bande Girls Secondary School in Migori County has taken her life citing harassment from one of the school prefects as the reason for her decision.

According to a police incident report, the 15-year-old girl attended a church service on Sunday held within the school premises, accompanied by her fellow students.

During the service, she discreetly left and was later discovered lifeless inside a classroom, the incident being confirmed by area chief Winnie Malemba.

The report also disclosed that she had left a note, in which he revealed the reason behind the decision with police launching investigations into the tragic demise.
