One body has been retrieved from the rubbles of a septic tank beneath a local football viewing hall in Bamburi, Mombasa County, collapsed on Sunday, April 20 evening.
The body of 54-year-old Abdallah Aziz Abdallah was recovered around 12:49 am Tuesday, April 22.
This is the first body retrieved from the scene following the tragedy over the weekend.
The body was taken to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue awaiting a postmortem and further processing.
Preliminary assessments have established that the football viewing hall was an unauthorised structure, operating without a valid trading permit.
Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Noor says that the septic tank was approximately 120 feet deep.
“This unfortunate incident serves as a stark and urgent reminder of the critical importance of ensuring all developments are regularised through the County Department of Planning,” Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir says. “We cannot compromise on safety, public order, or the rule of law when it comes to construction and business operations in our County.”
