Uproar after Gachagua reveals details of Ruto – Raila secret meeting

Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua’s revelation on Tuesday August 22, about a private meeting between President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila has led to an uproar within political circles.

Gachagua noted that Raila met with President Ruto in Mombasa where he presented his personal demands without factoring in the needs of other Azimio leaders.

“Raila looked for President Ruto recently, but he didn’t come with Kalonzo, he only discussed with the president issues about himself, his family and his people,” said Gachagua.

Speaking during a burial ceremony in Machakos County, Gachagua also dismissed the ongoing talks between the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions.

He maintained that nothing will come out of the national dialogue team that was tasked with unlocking the standoff between the government and Azimio.

As a result, Azimio leaders have continued to raise concerns over Gachagua’s revelation about an alleged deal between President William Ruto and Raila Odinga.

Speaking during an interview on Wednesday, Kitui Central Member of Parliament Makali Mulu warned that such a deal would jeopardize the opposition’s role in the country.

The MP explained that they were yet to establish whether the deputy president’s remarks were true or it was mere political rhetoric.

Mulu also criticised the DP for discrediting the talks between Ruto and Raila, contrary to an agreement made by a dialogue team selected to represent the two leaders.

On the other hand, Political analyst Herman Manyora wondered why the president had not ordered his team out of Bomas of Kenya if he was not interested with the talks.

“Why can’t Ruto order his team out of Bomas if he’s so much against Azimio and what he sees as their quest for a handshake, why?” Manyora asked.

Manyora had a week ago, stated that the ODM leader Raila Odinga was planning to finish Kalonzo politically by sending him to lead the Azimio dialogue team.

The political analyst explained that Kalonzo was too senior to be involved in the dialogue and his position should be taken by National Assembly minority leader Opiyo Wandayi.
