National Police Service (NPS) officers are under fire in the manner they handled Tuesday, July 23 protests especially in Nairobi County.
The anti-government protesters engaged the police in running battles in different areas within Nairobi even as they retreated to their homes after a day-long protests.
But what captured the attention even more was a video shared on social media that showed how police conducted themselves in Pipeline, Embakasi South Constituency.
In the video, a police water canon is seen been driven within the estate, spraying chemically treated water into residential apartments as protesters took cover. In another video, the police are seen firing teargas at residential houses, to the dismay of Kenyans on X (formerly Twitter).
To sum it up, an undated video emerged of a helpless woman and her baby being caught in the crossfire as police dealt with protesters. She missed by a whisker being sprayed with chemically treated water.
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has condemned the police over the same.
“Very sad. I lack words. Shame. Shame. Shame. Kenya Police Force you are out of line. Totally out of line. Shame on you,” the lawmaker said. “Residential areas should be out of bound for water canons; tear gas and live ammunition. You have gone overboard. STOP this abuse of power on innocent women and children.”
