US warns its citizens in Kenya over protests that may turn violent

The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a warning to its citizens regarding planned protests scheduled for Thursday, July 11, 2024.

The US embassy in Nairobi had anticipated demonstrations taking place in various cities across Kenya.

Although President William Ruto has urged dialogue with discontented Kenyans, the US Embassy raised concerns over ongoing calls for anti-government protests.

The US disclosed intelligence reports indicating that certain protestors intend to block major roads during these demonstrations.

“Even protests that seem peaceful can turn violent at any moment. Traffic disruptions and delays can be expected,” US citizens were warned.

Therefore, American citizens in Kenya were advised to stay informed through local media about the status of highways and roads before embarking on any travel.

To ensure their safety, US citizens were also cautioned to steer clear of large gatherings and to keep vehicle doors locked and windows closed while traveling.

“US citizens planning to visit Nairobi and other parts of the country were advised to inform their friends and family about their location and safety.”

Despite all these, President William Ruto had assured all Kenyan residents of security during any demonstrations.

“Carry a copy of your U.S. passport along with your current Kenyan visa,” advised the US government to its citizens.

Several countries, including Australia, Russia, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom, have also issued warnings to their citizens regarding the ongoing protests in Kenya.

The protests initially began in June 2024 in response to the Finance Bill, 2024, but have evolved to encompass broader discontent with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
