The Kenya National Men’s Rugby Sevens team, Shujaa, ended up in 12th place at the recently concluded fourth leg of the 2025 World Rugby Sevens Series – the Vancouver Sevens in Canada.
This disappointing finish came after the team suffered a series of losses in all their matches, from the pool stages through to the playoffs.
Shujaa began their campaign with a challenging match against Argentina, where they fell to a 24-0 defeat. The South Americans showcased sharp attacking plays and solid defense, leaving Kenya scoreless in their opener.
In their second pool match, Shujaa faced France. Although they managed to score 7 points, they were unable to withstand the French onslaught, losing 33-7.
The final pool game saw Shujaa go up against Great Britain. Kenya put forth a stronger performance this time, scoring 10 points, but the British side capitalized on key opportunities to secure a 28-10 victory.
In the 9th place semifinal, Shujaa battled Uruguay in a tightly contested match characterized by determined runs and gritty tackles from both teams. However, Uruguay narrowly edged out a 19-14 win, sending Shujaa into the 11th place playoff.
The weekend concluded with another hard-fought contest against Ireland, where Kenya fell short once again, losing 19-14. This result left them with a 12th-place finish for the tournament.
Despite their winless run in Vancouver, Shujaa retains its 9th position in the overall standings with 15 points.
This marks Shujaa’s lowest finish since their return to the World Sevens Series under coach Kevin Wambua. The team will look to regroup and refocus as they prepare for the fifth leg of the series – the Hong Kong Sevens, scheduled for March 28th to 30th. Kenya has been drawn in a pool with Spain, Great Britain, and France.
