VAR debacle: Panel rules Diogo Jota’s red card vs Tottenham was also wrong

SportsWORLD

An independent Premier League Key Match Incidents Panel has ruled that the red card given to forward Diogo Jota during the Liverpool vs Tottenham 2-1 loss was wrong.

This adds salt to the still-soar wound that Liverpool is trying to heal from, following Luiz Dias’ disallowed goal due to a wrong VAR reading.

The panel has now reached the conclusion that Diogo Jota’s red card was the incorrect call by centre referee Simon Hooper.

Two of Jurgen Klopp’s players, including Jota, received bookings during that match.

The Portuguese received his marching orders in the second half for two bookable offences.

Jota received two yellow cards in quick succession for fouls on Destiny Udogie.

Jota’s second yellow card not warranted

The panel, consisting of five members, ultimately ruled with a 3-2 majority that the second foul did not merit a yellow card.

As a result, the panel deemed the decision to issue a red card as incorrect.

It’s worth noting that the VAR system does not assess the appropriateness of yellow card decisions.

Consequently, the 26-year-old was forced to leave the pitch in less than 25 minutes after entering the match.

If an appointed commission rules that match officials in the Liverpool vs Tottenham English Premier League match breached the laws of the game, by disallowing Luiz Diaz’s goal. In that case, the Premier League would have to replay the match.

The referee’s body PGMOL responded to the incident, acknowledging a significant human error.

The PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) released the full audio from the VAR hub regarding the incorrectly disallowed goal by Luis Diaz.

Klopp’s men now need to shift their focus away from the off-field VAR controversies and concentrate on their upcoming Europa League match against Royal Union SG scheduled for Thursday, as well as their league encounter against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
