VDJ Jones calls for better event security after Raha Fest chaos

Popular Kenyan DJ, VDJ Jones has raised concerns over the need for improved security at entertainment events following the disruption of Shenseea’s New Year’s Eve performance during Raha Fest.

Taking to social media, VDJ Jones criticized organizers for failing to anticipate the actions of unruly attendees, particularly from Gen Z, who attempted to breach security protocols.

In his post, VDJ Jones suggested that organizers of such events should position entrance checkpoints further from the main gate to better control crowds.

He emphasized the importance of investing in additional security measures, stating, “If you can pay Shenseea, then you can pay a full lorry of armed officers.”

His remarks emerged after police used tear gas to control chaotic scenes during the Jamaican artist’s highly anticipated performance at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi on December 31, 2024.

The chaos were reportedly sparked by individuals attempting to gain unauthorized entry to the event, which has been part of a broader trend of “occupying” events without tickets.

This behavior has raised concerns over the safety of individuals attending large-scale entertainment gatherings in Kenya.

VDJ Jones’ comments have garnered widespread attention online, with many fans echoing his sentiments about the need for stricter measures to protect paying attendees and performers.

Critics, however, argue that organizers must also address the underlying social and economic factors driving such behaviors.

Raha Fest organizers had earlier released a statement condemning the incidents, describing them as a danger to event staff, vendors, and patrons.

The festival’s management called for “soul-searching” within the entertainment industry to curb the rising trend of entitlement and unauthorized attendance.

As Kenya’s entertainment scene continues to grow, stakeholders are grappling with finding a balance between hosting inclusive events and ensuring safety and order.

The incident at Raha Fest has reignited discussions about the responsibilities of organizers, attendees, and law enforcement in fostering a thriving and secure entertainment ecosystem.
