Veteran Nigerian actor Amaechi Muonagor died on Sunday March 24, 24 at the age of 61 years after battling with kidney failure, local media have reported.
His death comes a week after a video surfaced online showing Muonagor seeking financial assistance for a kidney transplant in India.
Muonagor’s death occurred at a time when Nigerians were still mourning the death of Nollywood star John Okafor, commonly known as Mr. Ibu.
A video of him lying in bed and appearing emaciated shocked his fans across the continent as social media users could not fathom how such a lively man was now bedridden.
“Igbo people, I greet you all,” the ill actor began, but could barely speak further.
At that time, actor Kingsley Orji explained that the veteran actor was suffering from kidney failure.
“It has not been easy. He has been in this condition for months now. He wants to go for a kidney transplant.
“He just came back from the ICU… a couple of days ago. He was responding to treatment but not very well,” Orji elaborated.
Due to the financial constraints, Muonagor opted to return home after failing to manage his hospital bills in India.
Nigerian movie fans have mourned the death of Amaechi Muonagor, as they posted condolence messages on social media
Monye wrote, “Deeply heartbroken by the news of Amaechi Muonagor’s passing. He was a talented Nollywood actor whose presence on our screens was truly masterful.
“We watched with concern as he battled health issues, offering whatever support we could to help him seek treatment in India. This tragic loss highlights the need for better healthcare in our country.”
However, chairman for the Actors Guild of Nigeria Emeka Rollas could not be reached for comment on the actor’s death since his phone was switched off.
