Kenyans are mourning the death of seasoned broadcaster Edward Kwach. His family has confirmed Kwach passed away on the night of April 28, 2025 while undergoing treatment at Coptic Hospital in Nairobi after battling meningitis.
In a statement, family spokesperson Michael Okwiri confirmed the news, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a beloved son and brother, affectionately known as Carey.
”It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son and brother, Carey, that occurred last night 28th April 2025 while receiving treatment for meningitis. Carey touched the lives of many through his voice and presence on the airwaves, becoming a trusted and familiar companion to listeners across the country.” read the statement in part.
Okwiri said Kwach‘s passing has left a tremendous loss to all who knew him. ”He will be remembered not only for his warmth and humour but also for his exceptional taste in music, which brought joy and comfort to so many. His passing is a tremendous loss to all who knew him personally and the many more who connected with him through his work.”
Edward Kwach had an illustrious career in radio spanning over two decades. He was known for his charismatic voice, easy-going style, and deep passion for music. Over the years, he worked in several top stations, including Capital FM and Homeboyz Radio, before joining Spice FM, where he worked until his passing.
Earlier this month, Kwach’s family had appealed for blood donations as he remained hospitalized in critical condition.
In honour of Kwach’s immense contribution to the station, Spice FM dedicated the morning show on April 29 to his memory, sharing tributes, memories, and heartfelt messages from listeners and colleagues.
Tributes have been pouring in from media personalities and fans alike. Radio 47’s Alex Mwakideu said the industry has lost a legend ”The Broadcast Industry has lost a legend. Lala salama big brother. Radio Legend Edward Kwach.” Said Mwakideu.
Sports journalist Carol Radull described Kwach as a dear colleague and friend. Former Capital FM presenter Chiko Lawi called him a “good man and true friend,” while veteran radio host Maina Kageni honoured him as “the greatest radio personality Kenya has ever produced.”
Kwach’s family thanked the public for their overwhelming support during his illness and stated that funeral and memorial service details will be announced soon.
”We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support during his illness, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who donated blood, visited, and kept him in their thoughts and prayers.” Okwiri’s statement read.
