Vice President Kashim Shettima says country is in a big economic mess

Vice President Kashim Shettima has revealed that Nigeria needs urgent tax reforms and a robust roadmap to save the country from the economic crisis.

Shettima also called on members of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy Tax Reforms to urgently come up with measures in an attempt to salvage the country’s economy.

He made the remarks during a meeting with the committee led by the Chairman, Taiwo Oyedele, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“I believe you have the best brains to come up with a robust roadmap that will reposition our economy addressing some of the fundamental issues underlying our fiscal and tax policies,” he noted.

“We are in a big mess, but I have confidence in your team. This is a great nation chained by poor governance, chained by many challenges, and my principal is a man of courage and conviction,” he added.

Shettima encouraged the committee to focus on domestic resource mobilization by coming up with fiscal policy and robust tax reforms.

The vice president also pointed out the need for the committee to strive towards meeting the national aspirations in line with global realignments.

At the same time, Zaccheus Adedeji who is the special adviser to the president on revenue explained that the presidential committee should work closely with the National Economic Council (NEC).

Adedeji noted that the move would promote effective collaboration with the sub-national governments that are critical in shaping the country’s economy.

The committee chair Oyedele had earlier expressed his commitment to coming up with a new fiscal policy framework that would transform Nigeria’s economy.

Leaders present during the meeting emphasized the need to involve Nigerians both locally and in the diaspora in seeking a solution to the economic crisis.
