Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has revealed plans of venturing into coaching when he finally puts an end to an illustrious playing career.
Speaking on Radio 47 on Saturday, December 17, 2023, Wanyama disclosed that he will be starting his coaching classes in the coming months as he prepares for the next phase of life.
“That is the plan,” he replied when asked if he planned to go into coaching before adding: “In the coming season (2024), I want to start taking my coaching badges. I will make time during the season.”
The Kenya international, now 32 years of age, has had an illustrious playing career, turning out for clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton, Celtic, Anderlecht, Beerschort, and AFC Leopards among others.
He currently plies his trade with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Montreal Impact and has one more year left on his current deal. However, he has not contemplated retiring from professional football.
“I have a year left on my contract at Montreal Impact. After that, I feel I still have some strength in me. I will evaluate the situation at the time, but the plan is to continue playing,” said the defensive midfielder.
Wanyama is the son of football legend Noah Wanyama. Alongside his elder brother MacDonald Mariga, they are considered the region’s most successful footballers.
Mariga won the 2010 Champions League with Inter Milan under Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho, while his younger brother reached the final of the 2019 Champions League with Spurs but lost to Liverpool.
