Video: Haiti PM narrowly escapes gang attack; UN-backed Kenyan security force fire shots to escort him to safety

Haiti Prime Minister Garry Conille on Monday, July 29 escaped unharmed after armed gangs opened fire near a hospital he was visiting in Port-au-Prince.

His security officers had to fire shots to cover Conille’s exit from the hospital, the prime minister’s office said.

According to the office, the PM had just finished recording an interview with local media when the shots were heard outside the hospital building.

A government source told AFP that Haitian police and members of the UN-backed Kenyan security force escorted Conille to safety.

It is still not known whether the incident, which occurred in a gang-controlled area, was an assassination attempt.

A video footage of the incident shows police officers taking cover as gunshots rent the air.

Reports indicate that the said hospital building has been under gang control from the end of February until early July this year, when a police operation succeeded in taking it back.

Gangs control nearly 80% of the Caribbean nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
