Village elders conduct cleansing ritual at Brian Chira’s home

Villages elders in Gathanje Village of Githunguri sub-County, Kiambu County on Friday convened at late TikToker Brian Chira’s family home for cleansing rituals.

Donned in traditional Agikuyu wear, the elders said the rituals were necessary after family and neighbors complained of the immorality displayed by young mourners who turned up for Chira’s funeral in their hundreds.

They said what transpired on March 26, 2024 at the burial, was a taboo and the rituals would drive away negative spirits left behind.

“We didn’t like the way they dressed, smoked and drank alcohol in front of us. They didn’t even respect the clergy. They were disrespecting our Kikuyu traditions, and we’ve never seen that before. They urinated everywhere. That’s not the way we were brought up,” one of the village elders noted.

They expressed concern over the lifestyle adopted by Kenyan youth, claiming they had abandoned their cultures and religion in totality.

“We’re worried about their future and how they’re going to raise their own children. It was a struggle even for the church to get access to the grave site. They don’t seem to know what they’re doing. We are calling on our village to hold a cleansing ceremony to remove any negative spirits left behind.”

TikTok users, who were Chira’s largest fanbase, raised over KSh8 million for burial expenses. Baba Talisha largely mobilized the online fundraiser to accord Chira a befitting sendoff.

Brian Chira perished in a hit and run accident in Kiambu on March 16.

A drunk Chira was reportedly feeling from a boda boda rider to avoid paying for services rendered, when a speeding lorry ran over him twice.

Online fans organized a memorial service in his honor at Rainbow Resort in Ruiru preceding his funeral on March 26.

Chira had his big break on TikTok after sharing news of a road accident to which he was a witness.
