The College of Human Resources Management (CHRM) principal Margaret Kinyanjui has advised fresh graduates to consider gaining working experience through volunteering and internships.
She made the remarks on September 7, 2024 during the 27th graduation ceremony of CHRM, where over 650 students graduated.
“If you are not able to get internship, please volunteer and look for an opportunity in any organization that has a Human Resource department and volunteer to offer services,” said Margaret Kinyanjui.
“Because when looking for a job, the first question you will be asked is what working experience do you have, but they don’t say you got experience through volunteering, or internship working,” she added.
According to the CHRM principal, volunteering helps fresh graduates to gain experience and built a better CV for the job market.
She explained that with the current unemployment rate in Kenya, internship or offering services voluntarily is the best avenue to gaining work experience, hence increasing chances of getting employed.
At the same time, the CHRM principal explained the need to embrace technology in managing HR affairs.
“Like I said before, the world has gone digital, you cannot afford to continue with manual processes at your work place.
“There are so many AI tools which can help in different operational matters in the office. For example, recruitment, there are all these AI tools that we have to sieve CVs, to give you exactly what you want,” she said.
She added that in case of performance management, there are also tools that can help HR managers to appraise employees.
