Harambee Starlets played out a 0-0 draw against Tunisia in the first leg of their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Friday, February 21, 2024.
The closely contested encounter saw both sides create chances but fail to break the deadlock, setting up a high-stakes return leg in Tunisia on February 26, 2025.
Starlets had promising moments in attack, carving out several goal-scoring opportunities but struggling to apply the finishing touch. With the tie still wide open, they will now shift focus to the away fixture, where the aggregate winner will advance to the final qualification round to face either Niger or Gambia.
Notably, Janet Mumo made her Starlets debut and delivered an impressive performance, showcasing her potential on the big stage.
Speaking after the match, head coach Beldine Odemba remained optimistic about her team’s chances.
“We played well and were very tactical in our approach. We created numerous opportunities, especially from the wings, but couldn’t capitalize on them. When we go to Tunisia, it will be a different game. We will review this match to assess what worked and what we need to improve for the second leg.”
Midfielder Corazon Aquino echoed the coach’s sentiments, stressing the need for sharper finishing.
“I think we controlled most of the game, but luck wasn’t on our side in converting chances. We’ve identified our weaknesses and still have time to make adjustments. Our focus now is on improving our finishing before the second leg.”
Harambee Starlets are eager to return to the WAFCON, having last featured in the tournament in 2016. The team is set to depart for Tunisia on Monday, February 24, 2025, ahead of the crucial decider.
