The family of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chair Wafula Chebukati has requested the public to refrain from speculation regarding his passing.
They assured that an official statement would be released once key decisions had been finalized.
Cause of death not revealed
Chebukati passed away on Thursday night while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
Speaking on behalf of the family,
Spokesperson Eric Nyongesa confirmed the loss and addressed concerns about the cause of death and the possibility of a post-mortem.

He emphasized that no decision had been made yet, urging patience and respect for the grieving family.
“The family is yet to meet with doctors, and no decision has been made on whether to undertake a post-mortem.
We ask everyone to avoid speculation until we are ready to share more details,”
Nyongesa stated from Nairobi Lee Funeral Home.
Family request for privacy
He also made a heartfelt appeal for privacy during this difficult time.
“We kindly request the press, media, and social media users to allow the family some space
as we mourn our beloved Wafula Chebukati,” he added.
The family reassured the public that all relevant information would be communicated once they had gathered all necessary details.
“We will issue an official statement after our meeting as a family,” Nyongesa confirmed.
Chebukati, who served as IEBC Chair from 2017 to 2023, played a crucial role in overseeing two general elections during a highly charged political period in Kenya.
His tenure was marked by both praise and controversy, but he remained steadfast in his commitment to electoral integrity.
On Friday, President William Ruto led the nation in mourning the former IEBC boss, describing him as a principled and diligent leader who served Kenya with integrity.

As the country awaits further details from the family, Kenyans continue to reflect on Chebukati’s legacy and contributions to the nation’s democratic process.
