Waiguru re-elected as CoG chairperson

Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru who is serving her second term as governor has been re-elected for a second term as the Council of Governors chairperson.

Waiguru was elected unopposed, after indicating she was interested in defending the seat during an Executive and Technical committee meeting to elect new officials .

Waiguru’s deputy Wajir governor Ahmed Abdullahi also retained his seat.

Some of the officials who also retained their positions at the Council include Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki retains the chairmanship of Health.

Meanwhile, Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka retains the chairmanship of Agriculture and Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa retains the chairmanship of Finance.

Susan Kihika the governor of Nakuru has been elected Trade Committee chairperson taking the reigns from Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti.

Nyeri County Governor Mutahi Kahiga took over the chairmanship of the human resources committee, succeeding Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi assumed the role of chair for the security committee, replacing Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana.

Waiguru previously served as the Council’s first female vice chairperson from December 2017 to January 2019.

She took over from former Embu governor Martin Wambora after the 2022 general elections.

Since its inception, the COG has had a couple of transitions of leadership.

The first COG chair was Former Bomet governor Isaac Ruto who served from 2013 to 2015 Meru’s Peter Munya served from (2015 to 2017).

Salim Mvurya was elected in 2017 however he did not complete his one year term.

Turkana’s Josphat Nanok served from (2017-2019), Kakamega’s Wycliffe Oparanya took over in 2019-2021) and Embu’s Martin Wambora (2021-2022).
