“Wale watu walikuwa wananipigia kelele ‘unga unga’ wamenyamaza” – President Ruto

President William Ruto has told off critics of the high cost of living in the country, insisting that prices of basic commodities such as maize flour have dropped significantly.

Speaking at Joyland village in Kirinyaga County on Saturday August 10, 2024, Ruto said that people who criticized him over the price of maize flour are now silent.

According to the Head of State, his critics don’t know what he did to reduce the cost of Unga (maize flour), which is now retailing at Ksh100 per 2kg packet.

“I thank you people of Kirinyaga because you are hardworking. When we reduced the price of fertilizer you went back to your farms, planted and produced food for us. Now the price of maize flour is at Sh100.

“Those people who were shouting ‘Unga’ are now quiet, they don’t know what I did. You (farmers) are their medicine.

“The prices of food are reduced, the cost of living has gone down and I want to appreciate you. You are hardworking people and continue putting in the work in your farms,” said President Ruto.

The President explained that prices of most food items dropped as a result of the hardworking farmers across the country.

At the same time, he commended Kirinyaga residents for using the subsidized fertiliser to plant food crops to enhance food security.

Ruto said the farmers’ efforts have enabled the country to have more food and the cost of living is now going down.

He emphasized his commitment to ensuring Kenyan farmers have access to high quality and affordable fertilizer, seeds and other farm inputs.

“We will ensure you continue getting fertilizer at reduced prices and we will always support you because Kenya is an agricultural country,” he said.
