Mathew Kirabo, a Ugandan murder fugitive who has been on the run for years has been arrested by Kenya Interpol.

Kirabo – convicted in the murder of his then-Makerere University girlfriend Desire Mirembe Jemima – was arrested on Tuesday, September 12 in Kenya.

His arrest comes after Uganda placed him on the “most wanted” list in November 2021.

Consequently, Kirabo’s name was populated into Interpol data, and a red notice issued against him. He will now be extradited to Uganda.

Uganda commends Interpol Kenya

“We commend Interpol Kenya and Uganda, who worked tirelessly to track down and arrest a wanted fugitive,” the Uganda Police Force said. “The arrest highlights the excellent relationship between Uganda and the Kenyan Law Enforcement and Legal Agencies.”

The Uganda police add: “It further demonstrates the continued value of the bilateral mutual agreements, between Uganda and Kenya, in bringing people to account for their alleged criminal actions.”

Kirabo jumped bail in Mukono High Court during the hearing of Mirembe’s murder case, who was killed on July 10 2015.

After the brutal murder, her body was dumped in Lugazi sugarcane plantations.

While convicting him in absentia in May 2022, the court observed that “Kirabo slit Mirembe’s throat over a relationship gone sour before he dumped her body in a sugarcane plantation.”

“He will be delivered to Interpol Uganda, and handed over to the High Court in Mukono, in liaison with the ODPP and CID at Kampala Metropolitan Police Headquarters,” Uganda police spokesperson Fred Enanga says.
