Wayne Rooney could be headed to Birmingham City

Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney could be the next Birmingham city manager, Should John Eustace leave the Championship club.

Rooney is currently leading the Washington-based club DC United in the United States.

He boasts prior managerial experience in English football, having taken charge of the struggling Derby team from 2021 to 2022.

Birmingham has had a superb start this season under the tutelage of Eustace heading into the international break.

Rooney has recently acknowledged feeling ‘disappointed and frustrated’ due to the lack of communication regarding his contract situation.

Consequently, it’s possible that he may be actively seeking new job opportunities in the near future.

At the age of 37, Rooney initially ventured into the realm of management.

He garnered commendation for his efforts at Pride Park, successfully preserving their Championship status in one season, although they faced relegation the following year.

However, the club encountered substantial financial difficulties, which hindered player recruitment and led to significant point deductions.

Rooney’s tenure with D.C. United, on the other hand, has encountered its fair share of challenges.

While there have been moments of promise during his leadership, his team currently occupies the 9th position out of 15 teams in the MLS’ Eastern Conference.

They are barely holding on to a place in the final series play-offs.

Considering his frustration with his expiring contract, it’s possible that Rooney could soon be seeking a new opportunity.

If Eustace were to be enticed elsewhere, Birmingham City might emerge as a plausible destination.

Nonetheless, given Eustace’s commendable contributions at St. Andrew’s, many will be rooting for him to remain and guide this promising new era at Birmingham City.
