“We are thrilled!” – KWS announces birth of baby rhino at Meru National Park

Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) on Monday, August 5 announced the birth of a baby rhino in Mweru National Park.

“We’re thrilled to kick off the week with some exciting news: A baby rhino has been born in Meru National Park!”

The baby rhino was spotted by rangers (David Komu, Alex Lealmusia, and Eric Mwandawiro).

“The baby rhino… is already making waves, and we can’t wait to watch her grow and thrive in her natural habitat,” KWS added.

The birth of the rhino, KWS says, symbolises hope for the future and highlights “our ongoing commitment to rhino conservation and the protection of endangered wildlife species.”

“Join us in celebrating this wonderful moment and supporting our mission to safeguard Kenya’s wildlife!”

To adopt and name the baby rhino, the Service is urging Kenyans to email them on [email protected] for more information.

21 Black rhino translocation

The KWS, in February this year, achieved a significant conservation effort when it successfully translocated 21 black rhinos from Nairobi National Park, Olpejeta and Lewa Conservancies to Loisaba Conservancy in Laikipia County.

This was executed by a team of experts in an 18-day exercise, although some challenges were encountered.

In May this year, KWS’s rhino conservation efforts received a considerable boost with the donation of a plethora of equipment, reading material and clothing items.

There are 17 rhino conservancies in Kenya, and the rangers’ kits handed out as per individual rhino sites included over 500 pairs of boots, solar panels, inverters, solar charge controllers, rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries.
