We don’t have a culture of complying with safety laws: Dr. Mukundi

We do not have a culture of compliance with safety regulations in Kenya. This is according to Dr. John Mukundi, Director of Royal Fanaka Academies.

During his exclusive interview on TV47’s daily report with George Maringa, Dr. Mukudi expressed his disappointment in societal cultures in Kenya.

Dr. Mukundi was responding to a question from Maringa on TV47 Daily Report about why Kenyans neglect safety protocols.

According to him, Kenyan citizens had a habit of assuming safety measures put in place to uphold personal safety.

Dr. Mukundi expressed that students’ safety while in school was not a matter up for debate regardless of the level of institution.

Dr. Mukundi on the Ministry of Education

According to Dr. Mukundi, the Ministry of Education has a central role in ensuring students’ safety while in school.

He stated that the Ministry had the mandate to enforce said standards and regulations on structure safety in schools, day and boarding.

It is important we ask whether the Ministry of Education has properly implemented the act. They need to check the buildings.” Dr. Mukundi stated. 

The acts in question are the Education Act (Cap 211) and Public Health Act (Cap 242) on school safety guidelines enforceable by the Ministry.

Many people want shortcuts in life

Speaking exclusively on school safety on TV47, Dr. Mukundi called out the Kenyan culture of not complying with safety regulations.

He went on to share that Kneyans compromise on minor items which later on cause greater inconveniences in the future.

It is like in Kenya, we usually don’t have that culture of complying, so many people want shortcuts in life” he stated.

You get some incompetent wiring technician who does shoddy work on a building,” Dr. Mukundi shared.

His views come as the nation mourns the loss of  21 souls in the Hillside Academy Endarasha fire, which according to reports was caused by an electrical failure.
