West Pokot: One suspect shot dead, 7 escape as police recover over 35 stolen goats

Police in Alale, West Pokot County have recovered over 35 goats believed to have been stolen by cattle rustlers.

During the incident on Saturday August 3, 2024 evening in Alale, a notorious cattle rustler was killed while 7 others escaped during a confrontation with police officers.

The confrontation occurred after residents reported an armed raid on their village, prompting officers and National Police Reserve members to respond, leading to a shootout.

The deceased gunman was identified as Tormok Loitasiwa from Namakat, while seven other gunmen escaped.

His body was then taken to Kapenguria County Hospital Mortuary for an autopsy.

What the officers have done

The officers have increased security operations in the area to curb bandit attacks and recover illegal weapons, with the region being a focus of the Komesha Uhalifu North Rift operation.

This multi-agency initiative covers several counties, including Baringo, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, and Isiolo, aiming to address cattle rustling.

Kindiki’s long-term goal to local communities

Interior Cabinet Secretary nominee Kithure Kindiki had emphasized the long-term goal of empowering local communities to combat theft of livestock and engage in legitimate activities.

Kindiki noted that cattle rustling in Northern Kenya had evolved into an organized criminal enterprise, causing deaths, poverty, and displacement.

He therefore explained that the government is committed to dismantling the cattle rustling infrastructure by making it a costly endeavor and ensuring the recovery of stolen livestock.

Meanwhile plans are also underway to provide subsidized agricultural inputs and services to revive farming in the region.

Therefore, he reiterated the government’s determination to eliminate both the criminals and the entire network supporting cattle rustling.

President Ruto’s plans on banditry and insecurity

Additionally on Friday, President William Ruto expressed the government’s commitment to transforming Kerio Valley and other areas in Kenya that have long been plagued by banditry and insecurity.

He emphasized the goal of ensuring that children in regions like Tiaty, Baringo County, Kerio Valley, and other marginalized areas have equal access to education and other opportunities.

Ruto highlighted plans to invest in these regions to promote uniform development across the country.

He also mentioned the Silale geothermal project as a significant investment that will create jobs and improve the lives of local residents.
