Westlands ODM youth leaders condemn attack on MCA Alvin Olando, call for justice

The ODM Youth Leadership of Westlands Constituency in Nairobi County, led by Evans Ochieng, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent attack on Kitisuru MCA Alvin Olando, terming it as a heinous and cowardly act that undermines democracy and the rule of law.

During a press statement on Wednesday, January 15 at Qaribu Inn Hotel, the youth leaders emphasized that violence against elected leaders is a dangerous trend that threatens governance and unity.

The attack, which occurred in Nairobi’s Central Business District, left the MCA with injuries to his head, hand, and mouth. He was treated and discharged from Aga Khan Hospital.

“As youth, we reject and denounce all forms of political thuggery and violence. Such cowardly actions are unacceptable and have no place in a progressive society like ours,” Ochieng stated, urging authorities to ensure the perpetrators face justice.

The attack has drawn widespread backlash from leaders and organizations. On Tuesday, January 14, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi condemned the assault, describing it as barbaric and a violation of democratic principles.

Members of the County Assembly of Nairobi also expressed outrage, with Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai accusing individuals allegedly linked to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja of orchestrating the violence.

“We will not be silenced or intimidated. Criticizing the governor for failing Nairobians is our duty as leaders, and we will continue to stand firm,” Alai remarked.

Kariobangi MCA Joel Munuve added that such acts of violence are not isolated, recounting his own experience of being attacked by goons during the opening of Mama Margaret Uhuru Hospital last year.

MCA Olando has accused Governor Sakaja of being behind the attack, alleging that it stemmed from his resistance to corrupt practices. According to Olando, developers were being coerced into paying bribes for building approvals, and his refusal to comply led to the assault.

The attack occurred near the former Seamers Club in Nairobi, where a group of around seven young men attacked the MCA.

The ODM Youth Leadership urged swift and decisive action, stating that such acts of impunity cannot be tolerated.

“We call upon law enforcement agencies to investigate and ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law. This attack is not just on Hon. Olando but on the principles of democracy and good governance,” Ochieng emphasized.

The youth leaders also called for political tolerance and an end to violence, stressing the importance of dialogue and respect for divergent views in fostering unity and progress.
