Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula is mourning the passing of his mother, Mama Annah Nanyama Wetang’ula, who died on December 20, 2024, aged 94, after a long illness.
In a moving tribute, Wetang’ula described his mother as a disciplinarian, a devout Catholic, and a firm believer in the value of education.
He credited her with instilling virtues of respect, honesty, and trust in her children.
“As I lay my hand on Maayi’s coffin, I feel the weight of her love and the depth of her sacrifice. This touch is my final gesture of gratitude, my way of saying thank you for a lifetime of care, guidance, and unwavering support. Though I cannot hold her hand anymore, I hold onto her memory, her wisdom, and the legacy she left behind. Rest peacefully, Maayi. Your love will forever be my strength,” said Moses Wetangula.
“This touch is my final gesture of gratitude, my way of saying thank you for a lifetime of care, guidance, and unwavering support… Rest peacefully, Maayi. Your love will forever be my strength,” he added.
A requiem mass was held at her home in Mukweya Village, Bungoma County, and was officiated by Bishop Juma of the Catholic Diocese of Kitale.
The bishop urged the family to honor her legacy of love and service to the community.
The burial, scheduled for January 3, 2025, was attended by President William Ruto and other senior government officials.
President Ruto paid tribute to Mama Annah, describing her as a progressive and caring matriarch who raised upright children.
