Who are the heavily armed men caught on CCTV ‘abducting’ father, son from their homes? Family says whereabouts unknown

Police are once again on the spot after they were caught on CCTV camera allegedly abducting a 60-year-old man at night, after they had abducted his son during the day.

According to the family of Joseph Kimani Machiri, who is a former MCA in Murang’a County, heavily armed men broke into their home in Kairi, Mathioya Constituency, some few minutes to 11 pm on Monday, August 12 and took him away.

The armed men were caught on CCTV breaking into the compound before switching off lights and taking him away leaving behind a shaken, distraught family.

The son, 39 years old David Machiri Kimani had been abducted earlier by people believed to be police officers at his home in Thogoto, Kiambu County. Their whereabouts still remains unknown after the abduction.

According to their lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, it is alleged that the two were abducted after the court granted them bail in an ongoing case pitting David Machiri against Equity Bank in a KSh1.5B fraud case.

Machiri, who was an employee of Equity Bank, was arrested on July 12 and charged for defrauding the bank a total of KSh1.5 billion.

Njiru said that the investigation team wanted Kimani held for 21 days but the court declined and granted him bail saying an officer investigating the matter had also listed the father as a suspect thus a person of interest in the case.

Ex-MCAs ‘abduction’

According to his wife, Nancy Wambui, they had spent the better part of the day with her husband and family at the church.

She said they had just retired to bed before they were woken up by dogs barking as the men gained forceful entry into the compound.

The traumatised family said that’s when they raised alarm before the relatives and neighbors responded to the alarm.

Kenneth Mwangi, brother and neighbor said he responded armed with a panga only to meet heavily armed people who commanded him to go back to his house saying they were police officers.

Susan Mwaura, wife to Kimani said that she last saw her husband on Sunday morning as she left for church only to get his missed call later and when she called back, he didn’t pick up only for the phone to be switched off and has not seen or heard from him up to now.

Residents raised concerns over the escalating abduction cases in the nation by persons believed to be officers and taken to unknown destinations, only to be released hours later after public uproar.

Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru insisted it is a continuation of the alleged police abuse of power asking the National Police Service and the interior Cabinet Secretary to intervene and ensure the two are released.

Their abduction comes at a time when pressure continues to mounting on authorities to stop abducting Kenyans.

Confirming the incident, Mathioya Sub-County Police Commander Paul Karobia said they had received the report and were investigating the incident.
