Chances for Harambee Stars qualifying for the Afcon 2025 in Morocco went from minimal to nil after the loss to Zimbabwe Warriors over the weekend.
Stars were supposed to win all their remaining matches and hope Zibambwe drops a point when they face Cameroon in their last group-stage match.
Harambee Stars last qualified for AFCON in 2019, their second appearance in the competition after 34 years.
Rooney Onyango missed a wide-open opportunity to give Kenya the lead in the 31st minute of the first half, and moments later, the Warriors opened the scoring.
Tawanda Maswanhise scored the first goal for Zimbabwe on a quick counterattack after a quick reaction following Kenya’s attack.
Jonah Ayunga equalized for Kenya in the second half when Zimbabwe failed to clear the ball properly after a scramble near the post.
Zimbabwe qualified for AFCON as they only needed one point to secure second place after Cameroon.
Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat is under fire from the fans as he has only won three games with Kenya since taking over Star’s leadership three years ago.
“We have to realize what we have a stop to dream,” stated Harambee stars coach Engin Firat postgame. “How many times have we talked about problems in Kenyan football, and they never finish the problems? Things are getting worse.”
“We have no fans, nothing, no support, no training grounds,” he added.
Despite consistently being held back by injuries, the team was criticized by the coach for their inability to score goals after creating chances.
Kenya faces Namibia on November 19, 2024 in the last group J match at Peter Makoba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa.
