Why hyena attacks are rampant – CS Mutua

National NewsNews

Tourism and Wildlife cabinet secretary Dr. Alfred Mutua has revealed the main reason why there is increased number of Hyenas attacks is because the animals are currently overpopulated.

Speaking to the media, Mutua said that the Hyenas population started increasing during the dry season last year as they fed on the carcasses of other animals.

“We have very many Hyenas and everyone is asking where they are coming from, but many animals in our national parks succumbed to droughts including elephants and giraffe and the hyenas feasted on the carcasses and they reproduced a lot.”Mutua said.

He advised the public to refrain from walking at night especially near National parks as that will expose them to the Hyenas which are roaming outside parks.

“As a government, we appeal to the public to restrain from walking at night. Let us do our errands on time to avoid being late since we know there is this problem of of Hyena attacks.” He said.

He further stated that that they have dispatched a team of officers from Kenya National Wildlife to search for the Hyenas as well as sensitize the community on how to live with them.

Mutua mentioned that the government has not been able to facilitate the compensation of the affected families since 2019 due to financial challenges.

“It will take time because of the financial challenges due to the fluctuating economy, However, as a government we are committed to ensuring that that they get justice.” Mutua said.
