Why I teamed up with opposition MPs- Wamuchomba

A day after launching a new political movement, Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has spelled out how it came to formation.

In an interview on K24 TV this morning, Wamuchomba stated that opposition, which has been known for keeping government on its toes, was sleeping on the job.

“The opposition in Kenya seems to have been muzzled and the voices of reason are fading away. The voices of reason from civil society are fading away. The media seems to be intimidated.

“I have been in the media, he has been in the media for many years and we can confidently tell you that the vigour and the muscle the media had to check over government is no longer there,” she explained.

“Team Kusikiza Ground” as it was dubbed, comprises of Wamuchomba, alongside her colleagues Babu Owino (Embakasi East), Caleb Amisi (Saboti), Mark Mwenje (Embakasi West), Amos Mwago (Starehe), Charles Nguna (Mwingi West) and Busia Women Rep Catherine Omanyo.

Wamuchomba justified the selection of MPs, saying they were like-minded and therefore the right people to keep government in check.

“I sat and wondered who am I in that parliament if my little voice of rejection of some of the things that I feel are not put right by the government is not audible.

“I can only look for people who are thinking like me and coalesce around me and create a bigger voice,” she elaborated.

In their Tuesday presser, the lawmakers touched on pertinent issues making headlines in the media including’ doctors’ strike, deployment of police to Haiti, fake fertilizers among others.

Wamuchomba demanded that the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi compensate farmers who unsuspectedly purchased the fake fertilisers.

On the doctors’ strike, Babu Owino urged President William Ruto to intervene and resolve the impasse as the strike enters day 14 today (Wednesday).

He went on to threaten nationwide protests should Ruto’s administration fail to address pressing issues.
