a Kenya Airways flight en route to Rwanda found itself compelled to return to Nairobi, on Sunday morning,17th December.
This was after the KQ flight had two unsuccessful attempts to land at the Kigali International Airport.
The diversion of flight KQ478 from Nairobi to Kigali was attributed to low visibility.
Further, the worsening weather conditions at the Kigali airport, made it impossible to land.
This was as per the statement provided by Kenya Airways PLC (KQ).

“At approximately 07:45 hrs (East African Time), KQ 478 encountered low visibility and deteriorating weather on the normal approach to land at Kigali International Airport,”
The statement explained. After two thwarted landing efforts, the decision was made to return to Nairobi, prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew.
Kenya Airways reassured affected passengers that they will be transferred to the next available flight.
Emphasizing that air turnbacks are standard safety procedures.
The airline expressed regret for any inconvenience caused, emphasizing the paramount importance of passenger and crew safety.
Rwanda Air acknowledged flight delays to and from Kigali due to poor visibility caused by heavy fog at Kigali International Airport.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the airline conveyed.

KQ stops flight
The diversion was prompted when tyre debris was found on the runway.
This was during routine checks by the airport’s Air Traffic Control around 9:20 pm.
Kenya Airways, in a statement, confirmed that the tyre debris belonged to flight KQ 310, which had departed on a scheduled operation from Nairobi to Dubai.
