Why murder suspect Kevin Kang’ethe is dropping his lawyers

Kevin Kang’ethe, the murder suspect who is supposed to be extradited to the United States, has dropped his lawyers.

Kang’ethe is accused of killing his girlfriend, 31-year-old Kenyan-born Margaret Mbitu.

On Tuesday, February 27, Kang’ethe informed the Milimani Chief Magistrate Court that he had decided to drop his lawyers David Muthama and Anthony Kago.

Kevin Kang’ethe: Why I’m dropping my lawyers

While representing himself before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina, Kang’ethe told the court that Muthama and Kago were provided to him by the DCI, and that he was not given the liberty to appoint his own lawyers.

Based on this reason, Kang’ethe said he had no faith in the two lawyers, because they would relay everything they discussed on the issue to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

He further blamed the lawyers of leaving him in the dark by not providing him with all the information regarding his extradition proceedings.

‘My side of story’

Kang’ethe, who shocked the country when he escaped from police custody at Muthaiga Police Station, also told the court that he was yet to be given a chance to tell his side of the story.

“I tried to explain what happened at Muthaiga Police Station. I’m not sure what to do at this point. Last time I was in court, my attorneys refused to mention what happened,” he alleged.

He now wants the court to allow him access his phone to find a new lawyer.

The Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), through Vincent Monda, told the court that that they have no problem with the murder suspect finding a new attorney.

Monda, however, told the court that he had already served the two lawyers with copies of extradition proceedings.

With Kang’ethe having dropped the two lawyers, it sends the extradition proceedings into disarray.
