Sylvia Bongo, wife of Gabon’s ousted leader has been jailed

Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin the wife to Ali Bonga Gabon’s ousted leader has been jailed her lawyer has confirmed.

The immediate Gabon’s former first lady was under house arrest together with her husband Ali Bongo when the nation was under coup de tat that led to his removal from power in August.

Her lawyer Francois Zimeray has announced that she was jailed on Wednesday evening for allegedly embezzling public funds.

Zimeray has term this move by the state as “arbitrary… illegal procedure”.

On September 28 Bongo’s wife was charged with Money Laundering, forgery and falsification of records.

During the house arrest reports indicate that she was isolated from her husband Ali Bongo despite being under the same house during the house arrest.

“What to think of a justice system which keeps people in solitary confinement for weeks before charging them, without having access to a defence?” her lawyer Zimeray said.

Their eldest son, Noureddin Bongo Valentin, has also already been charged with corruption and embezzling public funds with several former cabinet members and two former ministers.

The military accuses the former head of state and his entourage of falsifying the election results and have openly alleged that his wife has been manipulating him since he suffered a serious stroke in 2018.
