Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Valentin, the wife of deposed Gabon President Ali Bongo Ondimba was on Thursday, October 12 sent to jail in Libreville.
Sylvio, who has been under house arrest since her husband was deposed in a late August coup, has been under investigations over alleged embezzlement of public funds.
On September 28, the Franco-Gabonese was charged with money laundering, forgery and falsification of records.
The 60-year-old’s lawyer Gisele Eyue-Bekale says she was jailed following a long hearing in front of a judge on Wednesday, October 11.
The lawyer now says that Sylvio will be appealing for her release in 10 days time.
Under investigations
Ever since the late August coup, the military rulers have put Sylvia and one of her sons under investigation.
Six fomer cabinet officials have also been detained as part of a wider inquiry into alleged massive embezzlement of public money.
Ali Bongo, 64, was deposed during an August 30 coup. He has ruled the central African country since 2009 following the death of his father Omar Bongo.
