Will Smith set the stage ablaze with flames and faith at the BET Awards on Sunday.
Returning to his musical roots, Smith debuted his new song, “You Can Make It.” Featuring Fridayy and the Sunday Service Choir, the gospel-infused track focused on perseverance.
Surrounded by pyrotechnics, Smith rapped, “The darker the hell you gotta endure / The brighter the heaven you get to enjoy .
The harder the fall, the higher you soar. God opens a window when the devil closes the door / Believe me, they tried to bleed Will Smith / In the rearview, I see adversity was the gift / To lift me higher gifts requires faith.”
This performance followed his surprise appearance at Coachella in April, where he joined J Balvin for a lively rendition of “Men In Black,” originally released alongside his hit 1997 movie.
“You Can Make It” marks Smith’s first solo material in over five years, setting up his first major music release since his 2005 album “Lost and Found.”
Recently, he has collaborated with artists like Bad Bunny and Marc Anthony, and released the EDM single “Get Lit” in 2017. He also contributed the track “Light ‘Em Up” with Sean Paul to the soundtrack of his new film, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.”
Smith, a four-time Grammy winner, first won in 1988 for “Parents Just Don’t Understand” with DJ Jazzy Jeff.
They also won for their 1992 track “Summertime.” As a solo artist, Smith won back-to-back Grammys in 1998 for “Men In Black” and in 1999 for “Gettin’ Jiggy with It.”
