Police in Luweero District, central Uganda have arrested a 27-year-old woman for allegedly causing grievous harm to her child over suspected meat theft.

According to Daily Monitor, the suspect identified as Aisha Nampima was confronted by neighbours at her home in Kinyenje Zone for beating up and burning her four-year-old daughter.

In the August 14 incident, locals raised alarm after hearing the preschooler pleading for mercy from her mother.

Apparently, this was not the first time Nampima was torturing her child in the name of instilling discipline.

“When some of us approached her she was less concerned and insisted that she was disciplining her child for stealing meat,” Zimula, one of the neighbours, explained.

“It is alleged that the suspect was seen by residents burning, kicking, and beating her own daughter accusing her of stealing meat,” Savanna Region Police Spokesperson Sam Twineamazima said.

Police helped rush the child to the hospital while the mother was taken into custody for questioning pending arraignment. The 27-year-old is set to face charges of child torture which attracts a jail term of up to 15 years.

Luweero District Probation Officer Joyce Namigadde noted that they were monitoring the progress of the victim.

“The little girl is out of danger and responding well to treatment. We are also in contact with the police to find out exactly what happened,” she added.
