Woman arrested with 135Kg of bhang worth Ksh4 million in Kwale

A woman found  trafficking over 135Kg of bhang with an estimated street value of Ksh4 million was arrested in Kwale County on Saturday April 20, 2024.

The suspect identified as Regina Akoth Kungu was arrested by Mombasa anti-narcotics officers.

She was arraigned at a court in Kwale on Monday April 22, 2024, and pleaded not guilty to the charges of being in possession of the prohibited substance.

The 30-year-old Regina Akoth Kungu was arrested at her house within Kwa Musa in Diani, where several gunny bags containing the prohibited drug and Sh12,100 believed to be proceeds of her peddling were seized.

She was released on Ksh50,000 cash bail but the case will be mentioned on April 30, 2024.

Her arrest came at a time when the police and other government agencies have intensified the war against drug trafficking in the country.

For instance, on April 10, 2024, Police in Malaba town, Busia County intercepted 18 kilograms of bhang and 10 litres of chang’aa, illicit substances that were reportedly being ferried to Kayole, Nairobi, from Uganda.

Confirming the incident, OCPD Teso North Joseph Matiku said they were tipped off by members of the public of three suspicious looking persons.

“At around 1pm, officers got a tip-off that there was a matatu transporting bhang and they responded swiftly and managed to intercept one matatu from Eldoret Shuttle Sacco,” said Matiku.

Another incident was reported on March 19, 2024 when Police in Tigania East, Meru County intercepted a motorcycle rider with a 30kg stash of bhang.

In the 1 am incident, the officers from Muthara Police Station were on patrol when they flagged down the rider. Instead of stopping, the rider ignored the orders and revved on.

In a bid to scare the rider, the officers shot in the air and out of fear, he lost his balance forcing him to abandon his motorbike and scampered on foot.
