Women encouraged to enroll in technical education

Young people have been encouraged to enroll in TVET institutions since they offer an opportunity to students to apply the concepts and skills acquired in solving challenges facing the country.

Speaking during the Nyandarua National Polytechnic showcase for students’ talents, education stakeholders have also urged institutions to partner with industry players to commercialize their innovations.

The stakeholders called on parents to enroll their children in TVET institutions and take the courses offered, stating that they are the nation’s key to addressing the rising cases of unemployment.

They said that TVET institutions are playing a crucial role in ensuring that they bridge the gap of specialists needed in the job market through innovations and have significantly assisted students in discovering their abilities, meeting the ministry of education’s expectations.

Girls have also been challenged to pursue courses that are always associated with men in order to compete effectively in the job market.

As stated by the Nyandarua National Polytechnic Deputy Principal Mary Ng’ang’a, the school has instituted a special program in its curriculum dubbed WITED (Women in Technical Education and Development) which seeks to foster women’s participation in science and technology since this domain is top priority to any modern national development plan.

She added that the number of girls enrolled in science and technological courses at the school has increased significantly as a result of the WITED project.

Currently, the Polytechnic has female trainees in the departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Building and Civil Engineering, Applied Sciences, and Mechanical Engineering.

This, she said, will equip girls with the skills required to challenge men in technical departments and job seeking.
