Kenyan padel players have received a significant boost in their skills and techniques following a three-day intensive training program led by internationally acclaimed coach Fede Vivas Ribas. The event, dubbed the “Nairobi Padel Stage,” was supported by Air France and marked a pivotal moment in the development of Kenya’s growing padel community.
A Growing Global Sport
Padel, a dynamic racket sport that blends elements of tennis and squash, has its origins in Mexico and has rapidly gained worldwide popularity. Played on an enclosed court with walls, the sport now boasts over 25 million active players across 90 countries and is valued at €2 billion (KSh267 billion) globally, according to the International Padel Federation (FIP).
A Milestone for Kenyan Padel
Coach Ribas, renowned for his extensive experience and expertise, brought his vast knowledge to the training session. With over 20 years of experience and the prestigious First Grade of Padel Master Trainer designation from Adidas International, Ribas is a respected figure in the global padel community. He previously served as the coaching director of the Royal Padel Academy.
“I am pleased to see the enthusiasm and potential of Kenyan players,” said Ribas. “With the right training and support, the country could become a leading padel destination in Africa.”
Air France’s Support for Padel Development
The event was made possible by Air France, which reaffirmed its commitment to sports as a tool for community development and cultural exchange.
“We are proud to support the development of padel in Kenya and bring international expertise to local players,” said Hildabeta Amiani, the Air France-KLM County Sales Manager for Kenya. “This initiative aligns with our mission to connect global communities and support their aspirations.”
Kenya’s Padel Evolution
Padel Kenya, the club behind the initiative, began operations in March 2023 and has played a crucial role in the sport’s rapid growth. Starting with just three courts, the organization now oversees around 45 courts and boasts a membership of over 2,500 players.
The training event by Coach Ribas has energized the local padel community, inspiring players to strive for excellence and positioning Kenya as a rising force in African padel.
