Liverpool’s legendary former midfielder Xabi Alonso has been tipped to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid in the new season, according to reports in Spain.
This follows the anticipated departure of current Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti to Brazil.
It is clear that the La Liga giants are not too concerned with Alonso’s inadequate managerial experience.
Alonso has performed impressively since taking charge of Bayer Leverkusen last season.
He was linked with the Tottenham job before Ange Postecoglou’s appointment.
Alonso’s playing career spanned six seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he achieved notable successes, including winning La Liga in 2012 and clinching the Champions League two years later, coinciding with Ancelotti’s initial tenure at the club.
After his retirement, the 2010 World Cup champion transitioned into coaching, spending three seasons at Bayern Munich before overseeing Real’s youth team.
Later, he assumed the role of head coach for Real Sociedad’s B side.
In October of the previous year, Alonso took over from Gerardo Seoane at Leverkusen, with the team occupying the second-from-bottom position in the Bundesliga after eight games.
The former Liverpool player from Spain wasted no time in making a significant difference, leading Leverkusen to a sixth-place position in the Bundesliga and guiding them to the semi-finals of the Europa League.
Leverkusen’s season has commenced on an impressive note, with just a goal difference separating them from reigning champions Bayern Munich.
They’ve accumulated 13 points from their initial five matches.
While Tottenham expressed interest in Alonso before securing Ange Postecoglou as their manager, Alonso chose to remain committed to Leverkusen.
In August, he inked a three-year contract extension, extending his tenure at the club until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
Conversely, Ancelotti is anticipated to conclude his tenure as his contract reaches its conclusion at the end of the current season.
